Do We Still Hate HR? – Two Decades Later…
DESCRIPTION: About two decades ago, Fast Company magazine published the now infamous article, Why We Hate HR. A decade later, Harvard Business Review published an article entitled Why We Love to Hate HR…and What HR Can Do About It. These articles, as well as countless others, created an attention-grabbing awareness of people’s perceptions, feelings, and attitudes toward the human resource function in their organizations.
Since these articles were written, HR has undergone significant transformation. From working in administrative roles to becoming strategic partners and from serving as an internal “enforcer” of laws, policies, and rules to providing necessary tools and support to management. HR has become a critical component in leading the success of organizations by helping to improve staff productivity.
This presentation will highlight the challenges and opportunities faced by human resource professionals through the years and create a positive and impactful outlook for the future of the profession. Highlighting his own life experiences, Roy will take us on a journey through the last twenty years of human resources. He will provide key insights by sharing fascinating and amusing stories that highlight transformative initiatives, employee engagement successes, and creative problem-solving approaches to HR challenges.
TAKEAWAYS: Attendees of this presentation will understand, through Roy’s experiences, how to implement best practices in HR management, deal with some difficult personality types, avoid various HR “minefields”, and select various ways to enhance your HR department’s performance through metrics and strategic goals.
Roy Lantz, M.S., CCP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR
During his career, Roy had the opportunity to work in senior management roles in public, private, and not-for-profit organizations.
He spent a large portion of his non-working time in HR volunteer leadership. This included serving as President of both the Broward and Palm Beach SHRM chapters, supporting HR Florida as a District Director and State Conference Chairperson, and serving as President of the South Florida Affiliate of the American Society for Health Care Human Resources Association.
One of Roy’s major accomplishments was collaborating with SHRM, HRCI, and various universities to bring HR certification prep courses to Florida. Roy was the primary instructor at Barry University, Northwood/Kaiser University, and the University of North Florida during their initial rollouts of their programs. Over a period of 12 years, Roy helped prepare over 1,000 HR practitioners for their professional certifications. Though retired, he still provides various training classes through the Continuing Education division of Indian River State College.
Roy holds a BA in management and psychology from Jacksonville University and an MS in HR Mgt. from Nova Southeastern University. He is currently certified as a SHRM-SCP, SPHR, and a CCP from World at Work. In addition, he is a certified DiSC trainer through TTI Success Insights, and a certified Fair Housing Specialist through the National Center for Housing Management.
